MEMPHIS, TN — The Memphis Hightailers Bicycle Club (MHBC) has officially announced a new identity for one of its most storied traditions. The long-standing St. Patrick’s Day Ride, a staple of the Mid-South cycling calendar for nearly 30 years, has been rebranded as the Spring Classic.
The name change marks a formal transition for an event that has gradually shifted away from its namesake holiday to accommodate the growing local cycling community. For the past several years, the Hightailers have adjusted the ride's schedule to avoid conflicting with the rollout of She to Sea, an annual 500-mile charity trek from Memphis to the Florida coast.
Prioritizing Community over Calendar
The decision to move the date—and ultimately change the name—stems from the Hightailers' deep-rooted support for She to Sea. Since the inaugural She to Sea journey, the MHBC has been a vocal proponent of the all-female team, which raises critical funds for the West Cancer Foundation.
By shifting the club's major March event, the Hightailers ensure that riders don't have to choose between participating in the local club ride or supporting the She to Sea send-off. However, this flexibility meant the "St. Patrick’s Day Ride" often took place weeks after March 17th, leading to the more seasonal "Spring Classic" designation.
What to Expect from the Spring Classic
While the name is new, the spirit of the ride remains unchanged:
- A Tradition of Support: The event continues to serve as a fundraiser, frequently benefiting local organizations like Manna House.
- Classic Routes: Cyclists can still expect the scenic routes through Collierville and the surrounding countryside that have made this a fan favorite for decades.
- Green Spirit: Despite the name change, club veterans expect many riders will still sport their traditional green jerseys in a nod to the ride's Irish roots.
The 2026 Spring Classic is currently slated for late March, aligning with the She to Sea departure to maximize participation and community impact across both events.
